JESSICA LAUREN MILLER
Bernie and Sally Miller lost their granddaughter, Jessica, eight years ago when her stepfather beat her to death. Jessica was living in Florida with her mother and stepfather. Her father was stationed between Georgia and Florida serving in the Air Force. He was actively working to get child welfare involved with the family and get them to take seriously what he only could offer as suspicions.

Like any family, The Millers were devastated by this experience. Through the love and support of each other, they were also determined that their loss would not break them.

The Millers made a commitment to honor Jessica's life and amazing little spirit as a source of light for others. They are committed to making a difference for other children... and helping all of us remember the importance of families and value of life.

Each year The Miller Family hosts a benefit in honor of Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey. Seven years after Jessica's death, their Beef and Beer has grown to include hundreds of community members, friends and fellow child advocates who come together each year to honor Jessica and raise support for child abuse prevention programs.

In 2009, the Millers held their event on Saturday, April 18th at Bellmawr Park Fire Hall on 12 Essex Avenue from 8pm to 12am. Some pictures from the event are below.

On June 13th, 2009, father Bernie Miller attended the Katelyn Stinnett Memorial Run, a motorcycle run to benefit Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey on Saturday, June 13th. Bikers began at four starting points to end at Doc's Corner Tavern in Monroe Township, NJ for an afternoon BBQ.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Purchase supplemental materials and arrange events for your own community! Decorate and sell pinwheels. Plant a pinwheel garden. Check in with a new parent and offer your support. Anything that supports the children, parents, grandparents, and caregivers in your community helps strengthen families and reduces the likelihood of abuse.
