Fall 2009
NJPIRC Highlights

Parent Involvement Month October 2009: Delsea Regional High School Family Night

Family night at Delsea Regional High School provided an opportunity to address parent's questions and concerns about their teen's transition into High School and created an opportunity for parents, students and faculty to communicate in a supportive school atmosphere through a forum in which parents and teens could listen to one another. Delsea was one of 21 schools to receive a stipend from NJPIRC to host an event for students and their parents during Parent Involvement Month 2009.

NJPIRC would like to extend a "job well done" to all 21 schools that hosted events in October!

Taking Parent Involvement to NJ Malls

The New Jersey State Parent Information and Resource Center (a program of Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey) held 2 events in celebration and support of Parent Involvement Month. The first event was held at the Shore Mall in Egg Harbor, NJ on October 3, 2009 and the second at Newport Mall in Jersey City on October 18th, 2009. Both events were fun filled days for all with activities, a magician, and giveaways. At the Newport Mall NJPIRC hosted the Brothers from Nu Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity who provided an eye-catching step show! Thanks to all who volunteered their time to make both of these events a success.

NJPIRC's Work Referenced at Federal, Regional and State Conferences

In October, the New Jersey State Parent Information and Resource Center (NJPIRC), a program of Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey, participated in a US Department of Education Conference with state centers from across the country to receive the USDOE's charge loud and clear: parental involvement is critical for school success "from cradle to career." This conference underscored decades of research which demonstrates that when a parent is involved in their child's education, students perform better in the classroom and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college. NJPIRC's successful work, particularly in the areas of social media and creative tools to engage and educate parents, was referenced by peers across the country.

NJPIRC was also invited to showcase its programming to facilitate parent involvement at a recent regional Family Involvement Conference. NJPIRC was part of a panel presenting model efforts to engage parents to a multi-state audience of several hundred educators and advocates. More locally, NJPIRC facilitated an action lab on "Creating Family-Friendly Schools" at the state's New Jersey School Boards Conference in Atlantic City, at East Orange Community Charter School, and at Middlesex Regional Educational Services in Piscataway.

The USDOE is recommending several approaches already being implemented by NJPIRC to promote parent involvement. These include the development of: school improvement teams, family engagement action plans, special outreach programs to include fathers, and trainings to get parents involved in local efforts, particularly those focused on school reform and improvement planning efforts. Follow NJPIRC's "Cradle to Career" commitment at www.njpirc.org.

How Family Friendly is Your School?

The best way to nurture a strong relationship between school and family is to create a friendly and welcoming school environment.

This tool gives school and parent leaders the opportunity to evaluate how inviting their school appears to the parents and community of the school. After you have completed the walkthrough, give us a call or send an email and let us know how you did!
