NJPIRC Releases Title I Parent Involvement Self-Evaluation Tool For Schools
For
schools receiving Title I funding it can often be difficult to keep up
with the many requirements at hand. That is why NJPIRC has developed,
in partnership with the NJ Department of Education, a guide to help
schools reach and maintain compliance for parent involvement
requirements.

The
guidebook provides information on documentation, evidence, and
practices that not only meet compliance but allow schools to apply
exceptional practices to their current parent involvement programs.
This
resource is intended for anyone who is interested in learning about the
parent involvement requirements in New Jersey. This guide can be used
by district and school administrators, as well as Parent Advisory
Committees within schools, to develop and implement exceptional Parent
Involvement programs in accordance with Elementary and Secondary
Education Act (ESEA), Part A, Section 1118.

NJ Parents Learn How to Improve Pre-School Children’s Literacy Skills
Parents
in pre-schools across New Jersey are gathering together to learn how to
help their children become avid readers and learners. NJPIRC is
training and supporting preschool staff to guide meaningful parent
discussions about literacy development. School staff use a
workshop series called, Ready, Set, Read designed by Every Person Influences Children (EPIC).
Beverley
Fontenelle, parent, receives a certificate and a literacy bag from
Preschool Director Mr. Burt Miller for completing a 7-week Ready, Set,
Read workshop series at Love Kids Care II Inc. in Paterson, NJ.
EPIC
- Every Person Influences Children, Inc. is a national not-for-profit
organization dedicated to helping families, schools, and communities
raise children to become responsible and capable adults. Ready, Set, Read
is a unique workshop series that empowers parents to be their
children's first teacher, no matter what their level of reading ability.
Thus far in the current school year, 2009-2010, 8 pre-schools have conducted series of workshops from the EPIC's, Ready, Set, Read
program. Approximately 110 parents attended one of the workshop series
from schools in Union City, Paterson, and Garfield, NJ. As a
result, many parents have reported feeling more prepared and confident
in reading to their children, as well as encouraged to do so.
This is not surprising, considering the number of helpful topics the
curriculum covers. The curriculum discusses: how to support children’s
learning style, develop children’s growth in the 5 basic elements of
reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary knowledge,
and comprehension, as well as additional ways to support children’s
overall academic growth.
At least 20 additional pre-schools will be conducting the Read, Set, Read
workshop series by June 2010. During the upcoming months
workshops will be held in Asbury Park, Neptune City, Howell, Freehold,
Keyport, New Brunswick, Camden, Paterson, West New York, and Harrison.
Keep your eyes open for information on EPIC workshops at your
pre-schools.
DOE Releases 2009 School Report Cards
The
New Jersey Department of Education (NJ DOE) released the 2009 School
Report Cards for all regular public schools and charter schools in the
state. The report cards are public accountability documents that
are intended to enable members of the public to measure the yearly
progress of their local schools.
The
annual reports contain detailed statistical profiles of every school in
the areas of school environment, student information, student
performance indicators, staff information and district and charter
financial information.
Established
by legislation in 1995, the report cards are produced for all
elementary and secondary schools, as well as vocational schools,
special education schools, charter schools, and special services school
districts.
