Week Of The Young Child
Within Child Abuse Prevention Month was
also the Week of the Young Child, taking place from
April 11th to 17th this year. "Catholic Spirit", the official newspaper
of The Diocese of Metuchen, recently featured the Somerset Street Early
Learning Center and Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey in an article about Week of the Young Child.
"Our children here in New Brunswick schools
are receiving quality education and that's because of the commitment
and dedication of our professionals, our teachers, and the support of
our parents and community providers,” stated Monica Townsend, our
Statewide Technical Assistance Coordinator here at Prevent Child
Abuse-New Jersey. Read the full article.
Also in conjunction with Week of
the Young Child, Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey was the
recipient of a generous gift from CompuChild USA, in
recognition of Ms. Wendy Sidebottom from Whitehouse Station, New Jersey,
as Instructor of the Year. Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey was selected
as the recipient of this gift by Ms. Sidebottom. Read the official
announcement on CompuChild's blog.

Child
Abuse Prevention Month Photos
April's "Child Abuse Prevention Month" may
have come to a close, but New Jersey's citizens have proven their
dedication to families and children will last year-round.
We have already received a wealth of fantastic
photos... but we want more! Be sure to visit our "Photos" page for the current
gallery, and send us any and all photos you have of pinwheel gardens and
Child Abuse Prevention Month activities to pinwheels@preventchildabusenj.org.
Celebrating
31 Years of Child Abuse Prevention
Once a year we gather friends and advocates across the
state to help raise support for our child abuse prevention programs.
This past Saturday, May 1st, we joined more than 240 friends for a
Dinner & Casino Cruise that raised nearly $50,000!
The evening, hosted by Dr. Randal Pinkett, featured a
variety of casino games, silent auction items, raffle prizes, and more.
As we sailed along the Hudson River underneath iconic bridges and the
Statue of Liberty, attendees enjoyed a video presentation detailing our
dedication to child abuse prevention, words from Executive Director Rush
Russell and President of the Board Judith Tell Feldman, and much more.
Support for the evening came from Prudential, Sovereign
Santander, Verizon, US Retirement Partners, PSE&G, and many other
private and generous donors.
A gallery of photos from the evening is currently
available on our Flickr page.
More
Than Just A Staff Or Partnership: A Family
The following contribution comes to
us courtesy of Stephanie Scott, one of our Family Worker
Coordinators here at Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey:
Proceed Learning Center I in Elizabeth, NJ has created
such a great display for their parent supporting Child Abuse
Prevention Month that I wanted to show everyone how working
together and having such a supportive staff can make the difference when
trying to connect with parents. During the Spring Break week all of the
teachers, assistants, the center director, and other members of the
agency gave up their personal time to come to the center to help
decorate for the students and parents when they returned the following
Monday. Not only did the center showcase pinwheels, but they made a
garden with the children's pictures, a family tree, and they even
solicited local business to sign our "Promise For Prevention" pledge
cards. In addition to this, the family worker asked one of her families
to be models for a cut-out that was designed to capture family roles and
cohesiveness.
As you can see, Proceed I is a very family friendly
center whose staff exemplifies what it means to go beyond being
coworkers. The staff at this center is even more than a partnership --
they are a family.
